Where Is your "Treasure" ? - By Neville Tambe

Do not gather for yourselves riches on earth. Moths and rats can destroy them. Thieves can break in and steal them. Instead, gather for yourselves riches in heaven. There, moths and rats do not break in and steal them. Your heart will be where your riches are. Matthew 6:19-21

If something is of genuine value to you, there's no disguising it. The worth you place on the various things in your life is evident by your priorities. That which means the most to you will get the lion's share of your time and attention.

That which treasure, you treat like a treasure ? Is It Worldly (Earthly) Treasure Or Spiritual (Heavenly) Treasure think about it .

When your idea of a treasure aligns with God's idea, life changing tings happen. But before knowing God's idea what do you mean by word "Treasure" Or what is a "Treasure". Treasure means "A quantity of Precious metals, gems, or other valuable objects. In other sense keep carefully (a valuable or valued item).

What are "treasure on earth" ?

In general, "treasures on earth" includes money and possessions. Earthly treasure include the tings you can touch (e.g. cash, clothes, cars) and the things you cannot touch (e.g. Online banking , 401k's Bitcoins).

Now , before you jump to the wrong conclusion, Jesus didn't say that......

  • You can't own a phone
  • You can't buy a computer or laptop.
  • You can't purchase a home.
  • You can't buy a car.
  • You can't save or invest money, for retirement.
  • You can't buy more than one shirt or a pair of jeans.
What Jesus did say was, "Do not gather for yourselves riches on earth........"

Said another way, stop focusing on accumulating money and things and set your heart pursuing "treasures in heaven," Which leads us to the next question.

What are "treasures in heaven"?

There's a tendency to think that "treasure in heaven" only refers to things in the Bible, sharing with other, and being a generous person. We see this emphasized in several places in the Bible, including:
  • When Jesus encouraged his followers to sell their possessions and give to the needy (Luke 12:32-33)
  • When Jesus asked people to give to others who cannot repay them (Luke 14:13-14)

In these two example above, Jesus references receiving "treasures in heaven" and "being repaid" When he returns. so we can see that storing up "treasures in heaven" does include giving to your local church, nonprofit, and to those in need.

The Bible also refers to many ways followers of Christ can store up "treasures in heaven" Or "rewards"
  1. Faithfully enduring persecution (Matthew 5:11-12 ; 2 Cor 4:16-18; 2 Tim 4:8)
  2. Loving your enemies (Matt 5:43-48)
  3. Serving the Lord and his people (Matt 10:41-42; 1 Cor 3:8 ; Heb 6:10)
From just these few examples, we see that "rewards" and also associated with living & loving like Christ.

Real wealth is obtained by investing in "treasures in heaven". You are eternally rewarded when.....
  • You give
  • You pray & fast in private
  • You forgive someone
  • You share the gospel
  • You love your enemies
  • You endure insults & persecutions
When it comes to rewards, the greatest reward every follower of Christ will receive is this Seeing God Face-to-Face (Matt 5:8 ; Rev 22:4)

Do you treasure Jesus?

Before you roll up your sleeves to start making deposits into your eternal ledger statement, hang tight. There's one final thing you need to know.

In this passage, we never heard Jesus say, "Get to work!" But what we do hear Jesus say is this, "Your heart will be where your riches{treasure}are Matt 6:21.

Like an experienced doctor who can diagnose the source of your aliment, Jesus knows that our struggle is an issue of the heart not what we do or don't  do.

This is why Jesus connected his command to stop laying up "earthly treasures" and store up "treasures in heaven" to the heart. He knows that What we value is reflected to our life's and how we live according to it.

On the one hand, when the "world" is your desire, you'll be committed to storing up "earthly treasures". On the other hand, when Jesus is your treasure, you'll devote your life to live for his glory and for others.

Questions to think for your self :
  1. Where is your treasure?
  2. That which treasure, you treat like a treasure ? Earthly Or Spiritual
